Government to Establish 189 New Town Councils to Bring Services Closer to the People

The government is set to create 189 town councils, with the last 78 scheduled to become operational this July. Officials say this initiative is aimed at bringing services closer to communities and creating employment opportunities for local residents.

Among the newly established town councils are areas that have been automatically upgraded due to their designation as headquarters for new districts. Town councils serve as urban administrative units immediately below constituency-level municipalities, playing a key role in local governance and service delivery.

Speaking on the development, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Ben Kamumanya, emphasized that the creation of these new administrative units responds to public demand. “Yes, there are new town councils that have been created as the ministry is mandated under Article 179 (4) of the Constitution. The article mandates the ministry to respond to the demands for creation of new administrative units,” he said.

The establishment of these town councils reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen local governance, enhance service delivery, and boost economic opportunities at the grassroots level.
